Battle for Creative Arts - San Francisco, CA

Going down to SF for dance is always fun and inspiring. It’s interesting to see a different community of dancers and nice to see different faces. The ultimate is being able to see other individual styles. I feel like sometimes, especially in our area, dancers start to look alike. They all train together and that influences their style. (Don’t get me wrong, they are all amazing dancers, you just see how they dance similarly). It’s eye-opening.

Besides that, on the car ride home we had some really nice dance discussions and it can really put you into a better mindset.

Basically,

Music is the heart, but it doesn’t discriminate. Just because you are a popper, or b-boy, or whatever - dance to whatever. Yes, maybe you get a lame song, but work the best with what you’re given. You can talk about the dj later, but if you can kill it during a stupid song, that shows how strong YOU are as a dancer.
Dancing is movement, but so much more. I think your character is still important. No matter how good you get, or who you are, remember to not lose the love of dance or good attitude for fame.
Battles aren’t choreography. I just think it’s weird when people battle like they are constantly on stage. A battle is in the moment. It’s okay to have sets, but don’t just dance like you are doing routines the whole time. That’s one thing that really sets this kind of thing apart from the “classical” dances.

Occupy Vallejo: Floor Magnets vs. Renegade Rockers

89.5 Ozcat Radio Occupy Vallejo Battle - December 16th, 2011

We got there way early, and ended up hanging out in this radio station watching people graffiti up the walls. The guys were telling us to go look inside the dj booths and inviting us to look around. It was pretty tight, they had couches and all this artwork covering everything. The guy even told us if we wanted to go get food to make we could cook for ourselves in the oven! The actual battle started like 4 hours after we got there, but everyone got to session for awhile. Then of course battles are always inspiring, seeing people from the bay and elsewhere coming together to do what they love.

But, this battle really showed me how hip-hop is positivity coming from the streets. I feel like I’ve seen so many people (and been around those people) that judge hip-hop as being negative/destructive. Last night we went into a bad neighborhood, but the battle and the people were nothing but positive. And frankly that place was like a little haven in what didn’t seem to be not that peaceful an area.

Whatever, whether you agree or not, I’m inspired. And that was fun.

Renegade Rockers 28th Anniversary

First off, seeing a crew that has lasted for 28 years amazes me. Actually, seeing any group of people that can last that long simply amazes me. That’s dedication and commitment to not only the craft, but to the family that comes with it. And that’s tight.

Driving all the way to San Francisco on 2 hours of sleep when I have work at 6 am the next day is probably a little ridiculous, but also entirely worth it. Being at a real jam, with a room full of dancers is so inspiring. Trying to find our way there and seeing a bunch of guys walking on the sidewalk and knowing we were there because the looked like “b-boys”, it’s just cool to me.

Also, style seems so important. Whatever “tools” you have in dance - footwork or power or anything, it’s the WAY you use them that makes the dance/dancer. I think that pretty much applies to whatever style. Nice.
